Autumn is my favourite season of the year. This may be an unpopular view, as many associate it with shorter days and colder weather. However, it has only been in the last few years that I have truly understood why. There is a subtle shift in the natural world that invites us to slow down, breathe, and reflect on where we are. It suggests we 'take stock' to ensure we have what we need for the days, weeks, and months ahead.

Reasons to Love Autumn

Here are some of the reasons why I love this time of year:

Letting Go

Change occurs in nature. The most obvious example is trees and various foliage as they take on new colours and appearances by shedding their fruit, seeds, and leaves. Some may find this saddening as they litter the ground. However, I have always found it liberating to witness them letting go of what no longer serves them. This encourages us as people to do the same—whether it be outdated beliefs, worn-out routines, or relationships that feel out of rhythm.

Preparing to Nest and Hibernate

As the weather starts to become cooler, animals and humans instinctively feel the need to nest and make preparations. Along with this comes a craving for warmth and comfort. The feelings associated with warm drinks, comfortable clothes, and soft blankets serve as reminders that emotional resilience is built not through constant motion, but through intentional rest and reflection. As someone who loves to craft with yarn, there is nothing more peaceful for me than crocheting a blanket and having it draped over me.

Taking Stock

Autumn can be a time of harvest. It is when the things we have nurtured come to fruition, and crops are collected. This can inherently make us feel accomplished or disappointed, depending on how 'good' the return has been. It can also prompt us to review the decisions and actions taken earlier in the year and reflect on how much we have learned through the experience of nurturing the crop. I find it a good time to practice gratitude for both the joy and the valuable lessons learned.

Embracing Change

As the light fades and the nights become longer, there is a feeling of resistance. Everyone is aware that summer has ended and winter is on the way. This transition can feel uncomfortable and disorientating as we start to see the transformation of foggy mornings and golden dusks. It leads to some uncertainty, as we need to plan and prepare to take weather-appropriate accessories when we go outside. This change inspires me to journal and write about my feelings, being kind to myself as I navigate this transformation.

The Importance of Reflection

Autumn is not just a season; it is a time for introspection. The cooler weather encourages us to turn inward, to assess our lives and our choices. It is a time to evaluate what we have achieved and what we still aspire to. This period of reflection can be incredibly beneficial. It allows us to acknowledge our progress and identify areas for growth.

Creating a Cozy Environment

As we prepare for the colder months, creating a cozy environment becomes essential. This can be as simple as rearranging your living space to make it more inviting. Adding soft cushions, warm throws, and ambient lighting can transform a room into a sanctuary. This cozy atmosphere encourages relaxation and makes it easier to engage in self-reflection.

The Role of Nature

Nature plays a significant role in our emotional well-being. The beauty of autumn foliage, the crispness in the air, and the sounds of leaves crunching underfoot can all enhance our mood. Spending time outdoors, even for a short walk, can provide clarity and peace. It reminds us of the cycles of life and the beauty in change.

Practicing Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a powerful tool during this transitional season. Taking a moment to breathe deeply and appreciate the present can help ground us. Whether it’s sipping a warm drink while watching the leaves fall or taking a quiet moment to reflect, mindfulness can enhance our autumn experience. It encourages us to be present and to appreciate the beauty around us.

Preparing for the Future

As we reflect on the past, it is also essential to prepare for the future. Autumn is a time to set intentions for the coming months. What do we want to achieve before the year ends? What habits do we want to cultivate? Setting clear goals can provide direction and motivation.

Building Emotional Resilience

Emotional resilience is crucial as we face the changes that autumn brings. It is important to acknowledge our feelings and give ourselves permission to feel vulnerable. This season encourages us to be tender with ourselves. By embracing our emotions, we can build resilience and prepare our hearts for what’s next.

Connecting with Others

Autumn is also a time for connection. As we gather with friends and family, we create memories that enrich our lives. Sharing our experiences and feelings can foster deeper relationships. Whether it’s hosting a cozy gathering or simply reaching out to a friend, these connections can provide support and comfort.

Conclusion

Finally, whether you like autumn or not, it is a season of reflection and slow transformation. It offers a great opportunity to provide yourself with the emotional permission to be tender with yourself—to rest, reflect, and ready your heart for what’s next. Embrace the beauty of this season, and allow it to inspire you to grow and evolve.

Remember, change is a natural part of life, and autumn beautifully illustrates this truth. As we navigate through this season, let us cherish the moments of reflection and prepare ourselves for the future.
