Did you know that despite their vibrant, intricate patterns, butterflies cannot see their own wings and therefore do not have any idea of how beautiful or unique they are. Humans are similar, we can often struggle to see our own potential, talents and worth. Whats more, we tend to focus more on the flaws and compare ourselves to others rather than choosing to praise how much progress we have made or how far we have come in life.
Whilst we overlook our own achievements, others may well see the greatness in us. Sometimes, it takes an outside perspective, encouragement and a prompt to self-reflect for us to fully acknowledge how capable we can be.
Recognising and celebrating our own potential can be difficult, but there are some powerful ways to uncover it;
Self-reflection: Taking time to understand, what your strengths, passion and achievements are as well as what you desire reveal hidden talents and areas you may want to grow.
Trying new challenges: The comfort zone is not always a comfort and sometimes stepping out and being uncomfortable allows people to discover capabilities they didn’t know they had.
Seeking feedback: When we work on something for a long time, we do not realise how easy it is to understand. Sometimes asking others to review can lead to them seeing what we overlooked and provide constructive feedback.
Noticing patterns of success: If something comes naturally or sparks joy, it’s often a sign of untapped potential. If you talk to another person about these, it can often lead to an 'inspirational' moment of approaching things in a different way.
Embracing failures: Setbacks aren’t proof of limitations—they’re stepping stones to growth and proof that effort was made. People are often taught that they should not fail, but often we learn more when things go wrong, than when they go right.
Investing in learning: Expanding knowledge and skills increases confidence and uncovers new opportunities for achievement. People change over time as they grow and this can often lead to a new appreciation of mastering something new.
Recognising your potential is only the first step. Unlocking it requires action, mindset, and persistence. The key lies in embracing continuous growth, believing in your abilities, and taking intentional steps toward self-discovery.
